NVFS’ Multicultural Center provides a wide range of immigration legal, mental health, and case management services, particularly for individuals and families new to the United States. The Behavioral Health Services Division is dedicated to delivering quality mental health and substance abuse care through a variety of programs and services aimed at empowering the individual to improve their quality of life. It is the mission of the Behavioral Health Services Division to provide comprehensive diagnostics, treatment, prevention, and community education services to the individuals of the catchment area. The orientation of the Behavioral Health Services Division is to utilize its resources in ways that are responsive to a variety of community behavioral health needs and to allow for a wide provision of services to individuals across the life span. Individuals are assisted with accessing services which are outside the scope of the Behavioral Health Services Division. The Behavioral Health Services Division provides a continuum of services from short-term therapy, child and adolescent therapy which includes 24-hour emergency crisis intervention services, psychiatric evaluation and medication treatment, through case management, psychosocial rehabilitation, as well as housing and employment assistance for individuals diagnosed with a mental illness, substance use disorder, or a co-occurrence of disorders. This well organized, highly integrated delivery system serves to maximize continuity of care to its individuals. Services provided are based on the belief that treatment is individual driven and implemented in the least restrictive manner available. All behavioral health services offered adhere to professionally accepted standards and practices and are continuously monitored by the Behavioral Health Services Division's quality assurance procedures.

Programs that provide a therapeutic living environment in community-based facilities for individuals who have emotional and/or behavioral problems and require a structured, supervised treatment program which may include individual, group, family and other treatment modalities as appropriate, but who do not require inpatient psychiatric hospitalization.

Programs that provide walk-in, walk-out diagnostic and treatment services for children, adolescents and/or adults who have acute or chronic psychiatric disorders but do not need 24-hour care; and/or provide counseling services for individuals, couples, families and extended family groups who may be experiencing difficulty resolving personal or interpersonal conflicts or making personal adjustments to stressful life situations such as separation, divorce, widowhood, loss of a child, poor health, unemployment, family violence, delinquency or substance abuse.

Hospital-based programs that provide diagnostic and treatment services for individuals who have acute psychiatric disorders, who require hospitalization on a voluntary or involuntary basis for maximum benefit, and who might be a threat to themselves, to their families or to others if left in the community or placed in a less restrictive treatment setting. The objective of inpatient mental health programs is to stabilize and then return the individual to the community for ongoing treatment as quickly as possible, and to facilitate the transition by preparing the individual's family to cope with the limitations imposed by the illness and by arranging for other supportive services as required. Included are psychiatric hospitals, health care hospitals that have psychiatric units and state hospitals for people who are mentally disordered.

Bridges is an unlocked psychiatric residential treatment facility (PRTF), offering programs for Virginia children and adolescents ages 6-17. Residential treatment programs are helpful for youth who have not responded to outpatient treatments, who have educational needs that cannot be met in a less restrictive setting, or who are in need of further intensive treatment following inpatient acute psychiatric care. For youth who have exhausted the less restrictive options in their community, Bridges is there to help.

Emotional and substance abuse problems deserve the same attention as other health problems. They are treatable illnesses. Treatment means less suffering for individuals and their loved ones, less disruption in family life and the workplace. We provide outpatient assessment and treatment to those with depression, anxiety, chemical dependency, and other symptoms. Our professional staff offers outpatient individual, family, and group therapy to adults. We also provide substance abuse education.
